Carican Alternative Fund Managers (CAFM) Pty Limited is a multi-asset fund manager with a primary focus on investments in Sub-Saharan Africa.
CAFM is a partnership between Carican Investment Managers B.V, a dutch based fund, and South African shareholders.
Under the FAIS Act, CAFM is a juristic representative of CAEP Alternatives Pty Ltd (CAEP Alternatives), FSP No 50680, for Category I and II financial services
CAFM was established in response to the market for funds;
able to address the need for themed and more impactful investments; and that are more diverse in their ownership and management structure.
CAFM operates within the themed investment space with the aim of generating both financial returns as well as generating specific beneficial social or environmental outcomes.

CAFM’s investment thesis is premised on investments in innovative and sustainable solutions that address critical challenges facing the African continent.
Our diversified investment approach focuses on healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure and housing and energy.
CAFM’s intention is to advance principles such as the United Nations’ (UN) 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and United Nations Principles of Responsible Investing through our strategy and approach.
Mandy Jayakody
Chief Executive Officer
Mandy Jayakody is a seasoned natural scientist and engineer with 20 years of experience in infrastructure, development, and ESG. Co-founder of Aquila Projects, she specializes in impact investing, notably in affordable housing and green SMEs. Recently, she led the Green Outcomes Fund initiative and contributed to the King IV Report on Corporate Governance. Mandy serves on various councils and boards, including the NHBRC and Impact Investing South Africa, driving sustainable development and impact investment in Southern Africa.
Dietrich von Stackelberg
Chief Investment Officer
With over 35 years of experience in capital markets and commercial banking, Dietrich has held senior positions at institutions like Dresdner Kleinwort and UBS. He has advised clients like the government of the UAE and the South African Reserve Bank, with expertise spanning investment, commercial banking, asset, and wealth management. Maintaining strong business relationships globally, including in Germany, Asia, and Africa, Dietrich brings a wealth of experience to the table.
Johann Carstens
Chief: Business Dev & Strategy
With over 25 years in the property industry, Johann Carstens is renowned for his diverse developments, including mixed-use, retail, and medical spaces. He’s committed to social development initiatives, championing projects for community benefit. His passion extends to healthcare, where he works as a Health Futurist, leveraging technology to improve accessibility and quality of healthcare services, especially for underserved populations.
Stephan Pratt

Stephan brings 25 years of investment industry experience as Director and Owner of Prime Asset Managers, with a track record of managing multiple hedge fund portfolios and achieving long-term attractive absolute returns, showcasing extensive knowledge of the asset management industry.
Dr Christian Nagele
Independent Committee Member
Christian Nägele, a certified banker and PhD holder from Goethe University Frankfurt, boasts nearly four decades of banking experience, including 25 years in South Africa. He has held key positions with Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, UniCredit, and Sumitomo, bringing expertise in financial markets, investment banking, and international wholesale banking products.
Gary Moore

Gary Moore brings over 30 years of experience in the built environment, having led significant property development projects valued at over R5 billion in South Africa. As CEO of a private property investment portfolio managed by a family office, he oversees diverse holdings in medical, retail, residential, and office spaces. Gary’s expertise in project structuring, risk assessment, and commitment to quality ensures successful project execution, making him a vital asset in property development and investment.
Nthato Minyuku
Non-Executive Director
Nthato Minyuku is an external affairs and non-technical risk executive. She specializes in enabling private and public entities navigate headwinds and understand the present value of future investment opportunities. Nthato had more than 18 years experience within public and private decor entities such as Siemens Energy, Eskom, the South African Maritime Safety Authority, Shell South Africa, the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission and the World Bank. She had an MA from UCT and BA from Wits

Nicky Oates

Nicky has over 20 years of experience in financial services, transitioning from lecturing Economics to roles such as Investment Research Analyst and Head of Compliance. She’s now a director at CAEP (Pty) Ltd, supporting compliance for CAEP Alternatives. Nicky holds a BCom (Hons) in Economics and Risk Management, is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA), and is certified in Compliance Management. She’s also an approved FAIS Compliance Officer across multiple categories and has passed RE1, RE3, and RE5 exams.
Alex Lombaard
Advisory
Alex has been in the financial services industry for the past 3 years. She joined Prime Asset Managers in 2021, as an Operations Business Manager, working in accordance with FAIS, FICA, and POPI. As the business has evolved into the CAEP Group, Alex ensures efficient delivery of the compliance function to the financial services providers within the Group, which includes CAEP Alternatives. She has a BCom (Hons) in Financial Management and is an approved FAIS Compliance Officer, under supervision, for Category I, II and IIA.
